AMG: 1000 Model Directory

Last Thursday evening at The Magazine store in San Francisco, California, I was thrilled to attend the book premiere party for Taschen’s AMG: 1000 Model Directory, which is a large, two-volume box set that features photographs of 1,000 models taken in the mid-1940′s to the mid-1960′s by Bob Mizer at the Athletic Model Guild (AMG) in Los Angeles, California.

AMG 1000 Model Directory.
If you’re a fan of vintage beefcake, you likely know Bob Mizer nearly all by himself invented in the 1940′s the concept of male model. It was shocking in that era to celebrate men purely for their physical beauty. In fact, for the crime of taking photographs of men posing in bathing suits, Mizer spent several months in prison.

Luckily for us, Mizer persisted, believing he and his fellow photographers had the artistic right in the United States to photograph adults any way they chose.

He passed away in 1992, having run continuously AMG for nearly 50 years. His estate was on the verge of being broken up and sold off, when photographer Dennis Bell purchased everything in 2003.

A few years later, Bell set up the non-profit Bob Mizer Foundation, with the purpose of archiving and preserving Mizer’s work along with that of other photographers for future generations.

With Dian Hanson, who spent 3 years selecting the photographs.
In October, 2016, Trent Dunphy and Robert Mainardi, the owners of The Magazine, gifted their four-story building in downtown San Francisco to the Foundation, ensuring with their legacy a permanent home for the Foundation as well as for the two men’s massive collection of vintage beefcake photographs and magazines.

Each purchase of a new copy of the AMG: 1000 Model Directory will directly benefit the Foundation.

Not only are these two volumes big, beautiful books featuring exquisite photographs of some of AMG's most popular and handsome models, they are also an astounding resource for fans of vintage beefcake, such as myself, to identify models and for studying the various settings, props and locations Mizer employed in creating his photographs.

WONDER WOMAN - Official Trailer

I nearly lost my mind today when the official trailer for Wonder Woman dropped.

Yes, I was a pre-teen gay boy madly in love with Linda Carter's Wonder Woman meting out justice on television in the 1970's.

Based on this trailer, Gal Gadot's Diana Prince appears to be no less beautiful, battle-ready and bent on justice for all.

Steve Trevor is played by Chris Pine this time around. The film also stars Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen and Elena Anaya (who may or may not be playing Doctor Poison or one of her evil descendants). Patty Jenkins directs.

If you aren't yet a super fan of this superhero, The New Yorker magazine explores in this article her origins and the extraordinary life of William Moulton Marston, Ph.D., the man who created Wonder Woman and said: "Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world."

The film Wonder Woman opens on June 2, 2017.

Professional Skateboarder Brian Anderson Comes Out

Wow! It's awesome that skateboard legend Brian Anderson has come out of the closet.

Check out this video he did with Vice Sports.

The more LGBTQ men and women come out, the more role models there are for all the men and women already out of the closet or thinking about it.

LOOKING: THE MOVIE

Looking: The Movie premiered at the Castro Theater in San Francisco, California, on June 26, 2016 as the final film shown at the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival, Frameline 40.

Celebrating Patrick's return to San Francisco. Photo: HBO.
Last night, I watched it on HBO and was happy to once more be in the San Francisco inhabited by the characters created by Michael Lannan.

The film, which serves as a form of closure for the two seasons of the HBO series, was written by Michael Lannan and director Andrew Haigh.

No spoilers here, but I will say I teared up at the end, when two characters walk up Castro Street after a night of drinking to join friends in the 24-hour diner, Orphan Andy's. I've done that more than a few times over the years.

As I wrote here on my blog, I regret there's no gay-themed film or television series set in 1990's San Francisco to remind me of that era in my life. I'm glad Looking captured its take–if all too briefly–on today's LGBTQ experience in the City by the Bay.

STRANGER THINGS on Netflix

On July 15, 2016, Netflix knocked another one out of the ballpark with its original series, Stranger Things, created by Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, and starring Winona Ryder, Matthew Modine, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton.

I watched all eight episodes almost in one sitting.

If you like strong female leads, '80's nostalgia, horror and sci-fi, with a heaping helping of teen romance and paranormal goings-on, then stop what you're doing and clear your calendar so you can binge-watch Stranger Things.

No spoilers here, but it was astonishing in its freshness and nods to so many great films from the 1980's.

Laura Vandervoort, the female lead of the Canadian TV network Space's Bitten, finished watching Episode 8 a day before me. We both gushed over the series on Twitter. I even had a brilliant idea for next season's villain.
